SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Sunday remained discreet on the alleged molestation and subsequent resignation of former Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan and said there was no evidence against him at the moment.
Rijiju, who was addressing the gathering at the first North East Summit here on Sunday, refused to answer when asked whether there would be an inquiry into the allegations made against the former Governor and skirted the question by saying it was too early for him to comment.
He added that Shanmuganathan resigned on moral grounds.
The Governor allegedly behaved inappropriately with a few job aspirants but no formal complaint has been lodged so far against him.
A day after the allegations, as many as 100 employees of Raj Bhavan wrote to the Prime Minister accusing Shanmuganathan of turning the Governor’s House into a “young ladies’ club’. Following the allegations, Shanmuganathan resigned from his post on January 26. Now, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit is holding additional charge of Meghalaya.
