TURA: Faced with a severe traffic congestion plaguing Tura town, a district level committee meeting was held in the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex on Tuesday to take up ways to ease the problem. The meeting chaired by district police chief Dr M G R Kumar raised several issues relating to road safety, parking facilities, traffic regulation and management, drunk driving, underage driving, speed limit in town areas, among others.
The traffic wing of the police department pointed out to the proposed one way at Araimile tri-junction which has already been enforced with entry from the junction and exit via Araimile church in front of ITI junction. Since its implementation the one way traffic has eased congestion in Araimile junction considerably.
It was also informed that there are plans to ease traffic through one ways at several other locations, notably, the one way at Hawakhana junction with entry into the District Council office through Jerusalem road via Forest Department of GHADC and exit from Tura Government College on the right that meets down at the main road in front of Sangma and Sangma auto showroom and another on the left, near Captain Sangma’s residence.Proposals for enforcing traffic laws for other road junctions such as Ringrey and Hawakhana, was also discussed during the meeting.
One of the main reasons attributed for traffic congestion in the heart of the town was found to be the high number of private vehicles dropping children to schools many of which are located on the main roads of Tura.
The heads of educational institutions are being urged to provide transport facilities for children to avoid congestion especially during the school hours.
