SHILLONG: School teachers of the State under the banner Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM) have issued a week’s deadline to the State Government to enhance the salary of all ad hoc teachers failing which they have threatened to intensify their agitation.
The ad hoc teachers including Primary, Upper Primary, Hindi and 4th teachers sat on a day long hunger strike in the city on Wednesday demanding that the State Cabinet should immediately approve the grant for enhancement of their salary.
JACATAM chairman E.D. Nongsiang warned that if the Cabinet fails to approve the enhancement, the association will go on a mass agitation from next week. He claimed that the teachers have been pursuing their demands with the government since 2010 and last year on August 24, the government had assured that their demands would be fulfilled shortly.
Nongsiang also reminded that the chief minister had stated in the Assembly that the salary of all the teachers would be increased by 100 per cent, but nothing has been forthcoming.
Nongsiang also demanded that the cabinet should approve their enhancement from September 1, 2016.
