SHILLONG: The rate of accidents on the city roads have declined over the last one year as per the report of the State Traffic Police (STP).
The report mentions that from January 1 to September 30, 2011 a total of 127 accidents have occurred on the city roads. 37 people lost their lives while 175 people were injured in road accidents in Shillong. Last year altogether 129 road accidents had occurred in which 46 people were killed and 307 people were injured.
The STP said that the number of accidents have gone down in the last one year because of numerous preventive measures adopted by the traffic branch.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh said that the State PWD and STP have identified certain areas in the city where accidents occur frequently.
“We will soon put up signboards in those areas to further curb the number of accidents,” Lyngdoh said, while adding, “the traffic police needs speed guns and breath analysers to control high-speed driving and also drunk driving.”
