Majority want 4-lane from existing Umsning road

Fact-finding committee submits report

 SHILLONG: The State Government’s plan to construct the four-lane project along the existing Umsning road is supported by majority of the people of the area, as per the report of the fact-finding committee constituted by the State Government to break the deadlock over the four-lane project.

As per the findings of the committee, which submitted its report to the government on Thursday, majority of the people in the area were in favour of the government’s plans.

The fact-finding committee took the views of each and every land owner along the proposed Umsning Bypass and also along the existing road at Umsning, before preparing its report.

“The report has been submitted and now it is upto the State Government to take a final call on the matter,” informed sources said here on Thursday

PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh, however, declined to comment on the recommendations of the committee, but just stated that the survey had been completed from the existing Umsning road.

Earlier, a clear cut division was observed among the people of Ri-Bhoi and also among prominent NGOs of the district regarding the alignment of the four-lane road.

While the Ri-Bhoi Students’ Union (RBSU) was in favour of construction from the existing road at Umsning, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), an umbrella organisation comprising several groups, wants the government to stick to its earlier decision to construct the four-lane road from the Umsning Bypass.
