SHILLONG: There is criticism over the Centre giving exemption only to Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland whereas the whole country is observing Good Friday on April 14.
The Centre on Thursday deferred the observance of Digi Dhan Mela on account of Good Friday following protests from Meghalaya.
Congress leader and Co- Chairman of State Employment Generation Council P.T Sawkmie wondered as to why only three states were exempted from the observance of Digi Dhan Mela on Good Friday. “It is amusing to know the Centre’s stand on Good Friday. First they declared observance of Digi Dhan Mela on Good Friday and later, they gave exemption to only three Northeast states”, Sawkmie said.
According to Sawkmie, the BJP led Government gave exemption since they are election bound states.
“The fact that the BJP led NDA government did not give exemption for the whole country shows that the government is anti-Christian and anti minorities”, Sawkmie added.
