SHILLONG: In the wake of heightened activities by the GNLA, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that the Government, in its bid to curb militancy in the State, has now planned to come up with certain flagship programmes and schemes aimed at preventing the youth of the State from joining insurgent groups.

Dr Sangma admitted that it has become important for the State Government to address the root cause of militancy in the State.

“Unless we address the root cause of militancy, such outfits will keep on emerging,” Dr Sangma said on Friday.

“Flagship programmes are being structured which will give various opportunities to youths of the State in uplifting their economic conditions,” he said.

“Once the Government is successful in creating opportunities, the youths would not fall into the trap of militants who use various propaganda to influence the youths to join their ranks.

“Many youths are influenced to become militants in the name of community while many join the outfits just to become a hero so that people will be scared of them,” he said, adding, “One of the prime reasons why youths join militant groups is their poor economic background.

“Our mission mode programmes would help in raising the economic status of the people,” he stated.
