SHILLONG: A delegation of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) called on Health Minister Roshan Warjri on Friday to seek her intervention in improving health facilities in rural areas.
HYC members from Mawphlang, Rangshken and Umpung met the minister here to apprise her of the difficulties faced by the rural folks when it came to healthcare services.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, HYC’s Mawphlang unit president Bari Pathaw said they apprised the minister of the non-functioning CHCs and sub centres in their areas.
“The Mawphlang CHC, building for which was constructed I 2008, is yet to be made functional. The minister told us that shortage of manpower has led to the delay in the opening of the CHC,” Pathaw said.
He added that though the service provided by the PHC in the area Mawphlang is satisfactory, lack of doctors and increasing number of patients are making things difficult.
HYC’s Rangskhen unit secretary D. Langstieh said that the sub centre is his area has been abandoned since its construction in 2012.
“It has become a den of illegal activities,” he said.
He alleged that there are no health facilities at Rangshken and people are forced to go to Mawphlang or come to Shillong for medical care.
President of HYC’s Umpung unit Batkupar Wanning meanwhile demanded a sub-centre in the area.
“The Health Minister has assured us that the survey (for the sub-centre) will be done this month as the land is already available,” he claimed.
