Nagaland Guv tells govt to set up human rights commission

Kohima: Governor P B Acharya on Monday appealed to the Nagaland government to set up the state human rights commission at the earliest to ensure human rights of the citizens of the state.
“Protection of Human Rights Act of 1993 provides for the creation of state human rights commission at the state level,” he said. State human rights commission can inquire into violations of human rights related to subjects covered under the state list and concurrent list in the seventh schedule of the Indian Constitution, he said while expressing that every state in the country should have a human rights commission.
Human rights are not just about civil liberties but also includes daily and basic needs like education, public health, food, agriculture, employment and livelihood issue, he said.
The Governor stated that National Human Rights Commission is responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights, defined by the act as “rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution of India or embodied in the international covenants”.
He stated that human rights are relevant to everyone and not just to those who face repression or mistreatment. Human Rights provide basic rights and freedom and is based on the principle of respect for the individual. (PTI)
