SHILLONG: The railway project is still a distant dream for the hilly state where the connectivity with other states of the country is still questionable as Meghalaya is connected with the rest of the country only by a particular road the NH 44.

The railway project has been opposed by the KSU and other NGOs of the state fearing that it would bring large scale influx in the state. However, hope for the destined project has once again gone up after the state government finally decided to implement the work permit system in the state.

Taking a positive queue from the state government’s decision to implement the work permit the KSU will have its CEC meeting where the issue of railway in the state will also be discussed. KSU general secretary Hamlet Dohling on Sunday said, “We will discuss the issue of influx in our next CEC meeting besides the issue of railways in the state.”

The KSU leader stated that work permit system alone cannot curb down influx, adding there is a need for more stronger mechanism to check the influx.

The KSU also stated that they will follow up the matter of 3 tier card system with the state Government in days to come, adding the Union would also continue to demand for Inner line Permit (ILP) system in the state which would further curb down the entry of illegal migrants into the state.

Pointing out that the ILP would not hamper the flow of tourists into the state, Dohling said, “Even when we go to a foreign country we have to get visas and passport.”
