SHILLONG: KHADC chief executive member, P.N Syiem, has assured KHNAM that legal experts will be consulted with regard to the amendment of Rule 128 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951.
Speaking to reporters, KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum, after meeting Syiem on Tuesday, said, “The CEM has assured that by May second week he will gather legal experts and political parties to take a decision on the matter.”
As per Rule 128, non-tribals above the age of 18 years can take part in the District Council elections. However, unlike the GHADC, non-tribals do not take part in KHADC elections despite an existing law.
In this connection, Nongrum said the amendment to Rule 128 is necessary to protect the rights of indigenous people.
