TURA: Tura MP Conrad K. Sangma has urged the State Government to erect statues in memory of his father, P.A Sangma, and rename roads to honour the late leader for his work.
Late Sangma received Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India, posthumously this year.
“It is indeed a matter of great honour and pride not only for the family, clan and the people of his constituency, but also for the State and the northeastern region as a whole. It is even more special for Meghalaya as he is the first person from the State to have received this distinguished award,” Conrad said.
The Tura MP said with the whole nation having recognised his service for the country by giving this award, it would “only be fitting that the State Government gives due recognition” to late Sangma by allotting a space for his statues in Shillong and Tura and also name two roads after him in both the places.
In Tura, Conrad wants the statue to be in front of MP Stadium (now Dikki Bandi Stadium), which was built by the late leader. He also proposed that the stretch of road from Araimile junction to AMPT Road via TV Tower be named after PA Sangma.
