JOWAI: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Jaintia Hills district unit observed ‘black flag’ day on Monday in protest against the delay in centrally sponsored market project in Jaintia Hills.

FKJGP district unit president, Tuesday Lytep informed that the delay in the construction of Iawmusiang project which is the main market place in Jaintia Hills has badly affected the people in the district.

Hundreds of FKJGP members wearing black flag distributed the flags to general public in Iawmusiang.

They also visited offices including JHADC and DC’s office where black flags were distributed and the officials were asked to wear them.

Among the prominent officials, Additional District Magistrate, B. Mawlong and JHADC Chairman, Obil Kyndait beside Jowai Central MDC, Moonlight Pariat were also seen wearing the black flag.

Iawmusiang project was sponsored by the Ministry of DoNER in 2001 and of the total sanctioned amount tuning to Rs. 18.09 crore, Rs. 6.33 crore was released last year.

The project was first supposed to take off by the National Building Construction Company (NBCC). After denial by the NBCC, the project was later handed over to the state Public Work Department.

The FKJGP informed that the black flag day was organised as the first phase of their agitational programme.

“We will launch a series of agitational programmes in the near future if the concerned authority fails to take off the project immediately”, Lytep said.
