JOWAI: The Chief Justice of Meghalaya, Dinesh Maheshwari, said on Saturday the judiciary, the executive and the legislature have to work in tandem to deliver justice to the people.
Maheshwari, who was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for a permanent building for the judicial magistrate at Amlarem in West Jaintia Hills, said, “We have inaugurated the Court Building at Ampati in South West Garo Hills and we still have certain areas — like Mairang, Nongstoin and Williamnagar — which require the attention for construction of court buildings,” said the chief justice.
Maheshwari, along with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, laid the foundation on Saturday.
Law Minister Roshan Warjri, Justice SR Sen, local MLA, Stephanson Mukhin, JHADC Chief Thombor Shiwat were also present, besides head and officials of the District Administration and Officials of the High Court.
The chief minister said the Government has the intention to separate the judiciary and the the executive to create and enable to have the environment for effective judicial.“We have separated judiciary from the executive in seven districts and four remains. We hope complete this soon,” the Chief Minister said. Concerned over the rise of crimes in the State, Sangma said the government is focusing in the area where criminal activities are higher.
“Most of our people who are poor always hesitate to lodged a complaint against those who have committed crimes thinking that one the case is pursued it will be too expensive for them”. Sangma said adding that criminal committed all kind of crimes as they donot fear of the law”, he added.
The chief minister also informed that the government has decided to constitute the Directorate of Prosecution that will respond to any criminal activities in and around the state.
He also expressed concerns over the shortage of law professionals in Meghalaya as most of the cases lawyers or members of the bar were hired from outside the district.
Sangma urged parents and students to choose law as their career. He also calls upon the District Administration to reach out schools and college and utilised the scheme that the government has initiated for conducting career guidance to the student community.
