NEW DELHI: Motkupalli Narasimhulu, a senior leader of the Telugu Desam Party, is likely to be the next governor of Meghalaya.
At present, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit has additional charge of Meghalaya. Narasimhulu, who is a former Minister in Chandrababu Naidu’s government in Andhra Pradesh, is a five-time legislator.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to clear appointments for vacant gubernatorial posts before he leaves on May 12 on a visit to Sri Lanka. There are four vacancies for governor’s posts in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
A prominent leader of Telangana region, Narasimhulu is known for his criticisms of Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao and his Telangana Rashtra Samithi party. He was born in Nalgonda district and is from the Madiga community.
The governor’s post in Meghalaya fell vacant after V. Shanmuganathan stepped down in January following allegations of sexual misconduct with women.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana too, the governor’s post will be vacant after ESL Narasimhan demits office on May 2 after his five-year term for the second time. According to sources, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has not yet spoken to the respective Chief Ministers on the new appointments.
As far as vacancies at other Raj Bhavans are concerned, Madhya Pradesh is being looked after by Gujarat Governor O.P Kohli, Tamil Nadu by Maharashtra Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao and Arunachal Pradesh by Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Acharya.
