SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Frontier, and the State Government are jointly organising a month-long training programme with an aim to steer youths from border areas away from criminal activities and militancy.
Speaking as the chief guest during the inauguration of the skill development programme, P K Dubey, Inspector General, Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Frontier, said the intention is to provide an opportunity to youths residing in border areas to enroll for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
“We want these youths to join the military and paramilitary forces so as to keep a check on the continuing criminal and militant activities in the border areas,” he said, adding that this is a first of its kind initiative where both BSF and the State Government are together running a programme for recruitment in the central force.
“If some of them don’t get recruited we will try to get them job in security agencies and other industries,” he said.
As many as 75 youths, including four females, have enrolled for the programme.
The State has very low representation in the central force because local youths are reluctant to leave their native places, said Dubey.
The training programme will conclude on May 30.
He added that the advent of technological revolution has propelled people from the North East to search for employment across the country.
“I am optimistic that Meghalaya too will take part in that race,” Dubey added.
