‘Aaranyak’ wins environment award

Guwahati: Aaranyak, a society for biodiversity conservation in North East India and a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) as recognized by the Government of India, was awarded the ‘RBS 2011 Earth Guardian Award’ on Monday night.

The award ceremony was held at New Delhi and organised jointly by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) NV and Ranthambore Foundation, a release informed here on Tuesday.

Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh and Member of Parliament Dr Karan Singh graced the occasion at the national capital.

Aaranyak was chosen for the award for its outstanding contribution in the field of wildlife research, conservation and awareness generation in NE India.

The award was received by Dr Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, Secretary General of Aaranyak. (UNI)

Guwahati likely to get police commissionerate

Guwahati: Three years after a police commissionerate was mulled over for Assam’s main city Guwahati for better security preparedness following the October 30 serial blasts in 2008, the new system is likely to be operational soon.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday directed the chief secretary to initiate all necessary steps for introducing the police commissionarate system in the city expeditiously, a release informed.

The chief minister had also ordered for setting up of a grievance cell under the Home Department for handling the cases of victims of extremist’s violence.

He also expressed his displeasure over the delay in CCTV installation in Guwahati and directed the chief secretary to furnish a detailed report on it.

The commissionarate was proposed for the city soon after the blasts, but no concrete steps were initiated to form it.

CCTVs were also proposed to be installed after the serial blasts, in which close to 100 people were killed. (UNI)
