Mr P R Kyndiah, a senior APHLC leader, has announced his dissociation from the unity talks between the APHLC and the HSPDP. In a recent letter issued to the party’s East Khasi Hills District Secretary, Mr Korbar Singh, he made his stand clear that “unification should take place before the (District Council) election and not after.”

Mr Kyndiah blamed “the dominant leadership” of the HSPDP and “a caucus” in APHLC for “complete reversal of the understanding”. The letter said that the dominant leadership of the HSPDP was “not sincere and lacks political will” for amalgamating the two parties. “To them it is a mere political game”, he said.

The HSPDP, he said, “unilaterally” decided for electoral understanding in the Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills District Council elections. “The decision was imposed on the APHLC”.

Mr Kyndiah said “the results of the Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills District Council election have shown that the people did not accept electoral adjustment and it would not be politically wise to repeat the electoral adjustment. There was “confusion” among the voters to select a candidate “having two flags”. He added “at this point of time, the top leaders of the APHLC and HSPDP had agreed that by all means, the unification of the two parties should be brought about before the election to the District Council of Khasi Hills.” He further said “it is a matter of regret that the dominant leadership backed out free from that understanding.”

Meanwhile Mr Kyndiah told Shillong Times that he was not joining the Congress(I). “I am still with the APHLC and will continue to do so.”

Asked what would be his role in his own constituency in the coming election, he informed that he was setting up an Independent candidate.
