NONGPOH: In a bid to protect the wide variety of birds that flock to the surroundings of the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the area has been declared a ‘bird’s haven’.
The decision in this regard was taken by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi, the Wildlife Department, Nongpoh Range in association with the Ri Bhoi Wildlife and Environment Protection Society. Speaking to this scribe here on Monday, general secretary of Ri Bhoi Wildlife and Environment Protection Society T. Lyngdoh said that the Society and the Wildlife Department was extremely concerned about the mass killing of wildlife in the district and the area surrounding the DC’s office has been declared a bird’s haven to create awareness among people on the need to preserve wildlife.
“We have decided to work hand in hand with the Wildlife Department of Ri Bhoi to stop the ongoing killing of wildlife, especially birds,” Lyngdoh said.
He asserted that anyone found killing wildlife in the district will be punished as per the Wildlife Act, 1972.
