TURA: A group of Good Samaritans in North Garo Hills district has established a college to address the problem of students seeking admission for higher secondary.
Resu Union College, an institution of Arts, is preparing to usher in its first batch of students.
The college – which has come up on the land at Mochorpara, 3 km from Resubelpara town, gifted by the Nokma of the area – will initially use the classrooms of a middle English school before shifting to the permanent campus.
Though the number of students is increasing every year, the number of quality institutions has remained stagnant. This prompted the group of citizens from Resubelpara to take upon them to address the situation.
The college has elected a governing body with former educationists V.J Abraham as its secretary and Waram Sangma, Creamline Sangma, Denitha Arengh and Wilness Marak as members.
“It was felt by everyone that a permanent college is needed because the number of students passing out Class X was going up with each year while new colleges were not,” said Wilness Marak, student leader and member of the college governing body.
While there are three higher secondary schools catering to the 10+2 students in Resubelpara town, the nearest college is around 4km away at Mendipather. The college building comprising four classrooms is currently in a position to take in approximately eighty students per class. “Initially we will focus on Classes 11 and 12 but if the response is high, we will consider going into the degree level as well,” said Wilness Marak.
