SHILLONG: From a 37 percent record in the last month, the Measles Catch Up Campaign (MCUP) Phase II has gradually picked up momentum in the State with a total of 65.2 percent till November 1.

According to the Nodal Officer, MCUP Dr MR Basaiawmoit, the Measles Catch Up Campaign is gaining momentum in the state but there are still some areas with poor coverage due to lack of awareness particularly in remote, difficult-to-reach areas in West Khasi Hills, East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills.

“Even in East Khasi Hills district, areas under Smit PHC, Jongksha PHC, Pomlum PHC, Sohiong CHC, Mawiong CHC & Mawphlang PHC and in Shillong Urban areas like Malki & Nongthymmai, the vaccine acceptance has been low”, Dr Basaiawmoit added. The expected targeted in the state is six lakhs sixty six thousand three hundred and sixty six and till date about four lakhs thirty four thousand five hundred and fifty eight has been covered which indicates a 65.2 percent coverage.

“If the vaccine coverage is around 90-95%, it would lead to reduction of measles cases and deaths, which would reduce infant mortality and childhood mortality in the State”, stated Dr Basaiawmoit.

Doctors and health workers, supported by Education Department, ICDS (Social Welfare department) and Rangbah Shnongs are out in the field trying to spread awareness about the campaign, trying to remove doubts amongst the public by addressing their specific queries, the Nodal Officer added.

“We hope that the vaccine would be accepted widely so that at least 90-95% of the children are covered, only then we would be able to reduce measles cases and deaths, which would help reduce infant mortality and childhood mortality in the State “, Dr Basaiawmoit said.
