SHILLONG: Following the resignation of Dr ME Yeolekar as the Director of NEIGRIHMS, the State Government has decided to ask the Union Government to speed up the process of appointment of the new Director.

“We would urge the Centre to appoint the new Director as soon as possible to ensure the smooth functioning of the institute,” Deputy Chief Minister In-charge Health and Family Welfare, Rowell Lyngdoh, said on Wednesday.

Commenting on reports that former Head of Radiotherapy department in Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore Dr (Mrs) Faith Rangad, might be appointed as the new Director, Lyngdoh said that it was the discretion of the Union Ministry to decide on the new Director. “We would not want to interfere on this matter,” Lyngdoh added.

He, however, informed that MPCC president Friday Lyngdoh had urged the Ministry to appoint Dr Rangad as the new Director.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Dr Yeolekar had not handed over charge to any of his colleagues before his departure.

“Dr Yeolekar was expected to formally hand over the charge before leaving the institute. But he preferred not to talk to anybody and silently left the institute,” sources said on Wednesday.

It was also learnt that Dr Yeolekar would be joining a private hospital in Mumbai.
