TURA: The Siju-Rongara unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has slammed the ruling Congress in the State for neglecting South Garo Hills District, especially for delaying repair of NH-62.
“The 105km highway, which is the only lifeline for the people of the district, is barely motorable and the distance from Tura to Baghmara, the district headquarters of South Garo Hills, which could be covered in not more than four hours takes 5-6 hours now,” the NPP said.
Besides locals, many district officials and VIPs take the road regularly and the dilapidated condition is making it difficult for all to travel on the national highway.
The Siju-Rongara unit of NPP said the district will be cut off from the rest of Garo Hills if the road is not repaired immediately.
“It is shocking that the State Government has failed to provide good connectivity despite the district being rich in mineral resources and a tourist destination. It is an embarrassment for state highway and NH-62 officials, the district administration and MLAs of the region,” it said as it stressed on the repair of the stretch from Dangsa A’we to Baghmara and Baghmara to Tura.
