SHILLONG: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its camp sitting in Guwahati on Wednesday took up eight cases related to Meghalaya and zeroed in on three for follow-up action.
Supreme Court lawyer Ranjan Mukherjee, who represented Meghalaya during the hearing, said over phone that while three cases were examined by the Full Bench of the Commission, other cases were dealt by the two division benches.
Except for three, the Commission had closed other pending cases.
Mukherjee said among the three cases, one was for paying compensation for a police shootout victim, while the second one was for filing additional charge sheet related to rape of a 12-year-old girl by a police officer under criminal sections related to atrocities against ST, SC and also under POCSO.
In the third case, NHRC reserved its verdict on the death of a thief in a hospital after he was arrested along with his accomplice for a break-in in Jaintia Hills.
