SHILLONG: The decreasing number of students joining the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides (MBSG) is worrying the scouting and guiding association which has called for support from institute heads to improve the figures.
As per records, there are approximately 400 schools that are members of MBSG with 20, 000 students (11,000 females or guides and 9,000 males or scouts) enrolled.
“If we go by the figures, only 2 per cent of the students are members of the MBSG,” MBSG secretary A Swer said while expressing concern over the trend. Swer was speaking on the sidelines the District Level Group Leaders’ Meet 2017 of all the Heads of Institution of Higher and Secondary Level, East Khasi Hills District.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Extra Assistant Commissioner M. Shira Kshir said that MBSG provides a platform to channelise the energy of youngsters to do productive things.
She informed that the government is on the move to expand MBSG and encouraged the heads of different institutions present at the meeting to urge students to go for scouting and guiding.
Meanwhile, Swer informed that the Education department  has decided to expand scouting and guiding in the State.
Swer maintained that scouting and guiding will not disturb the studies of the students as it is value based education. She urged the educational institutions to adopt scouting and guiding in their schools.
