Mooshahary pats MLCU

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Governor RS Mooshahary has decried mushrooming of private universities in the State saying, “We cannot substitute quality with quantity”.

Addressing a programme organised to mark the launching of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in city on Friday, Mooshahary said several private universities in the State had failed to deliver the goods jeopardizing the career of students.

“Though numerically universities are increasing day-by-day but the standard of education is not up to the mark”, the Governor said.

Referring to Shillong as a city once known as an educational hub in the region, Mooshahary said, “It is high time to restore Shillong’s glorious past.

“Learning was not merely for earning, we should stress more on ‘building of conscience’ in the minds of students to make them responsible citizens,” he said.

The Governor also observed that over the last six years, the State Government had passed a number of legislations establishing eleven universities, including ten private ones. “Only one of these private universities was functioning to “some level of satisfaction” which is the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU),” he added.

Echoing similar view, Power Minister AT Mondal said the private universities should provide quality education.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Education, Research and Development Foundation (ERD) Foundation Mahbubul Hoque, who has been appointed as the Chancellor of the University, said, “With almost two years of focused study on the educational needs of the region by expert academicians, scientists and a group of former Vice Chancellors of the region, we have formulated the roadmap, mission and vision documents of the new university-USTM”.

The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya has been promoted by the Education, Research and Development Foundation (ERD) Foundation and the campus is located at USTM, Techno City Opposite CRPF Group Centre at Killing Road (9th Mile), Ri-Bhoi District.
