SHILLONG: The State BJP leadership has petitioned BJP general secretary in charge of Meghalaya, Nalin Kohli, to take up with the Centre the concerns over the new notification on cow slaughter.
The state BJP held an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the matter.
When contacted, BJP vice president and party spokesperson J.A Lyngdoh said the letter expressing concerns was sent to the central leader through BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh.
According to J.A Lyngdoh, since cow slaughter is a state subject, care should be taken by the Centre not to disturb the sentiments of the people who are concerned over the matter.
“We as members of the party are shocked to see the matter related to cow slaughter cropping up again and again while at the same time, the central leaders who visit the State make assurances that the food habits of the people of the State and elsewhere in the Northeast would not be disturbed,” Lyngdoh said.
According to Lyngdoh, the state leaders have taken serious note of the issue and requested Kohli to take up the matter with the Centre to allay fears.
“We hope that the party will take a favourable stand,” Lyngdoh added.
