MANIKGANJ: The BJP leadership has accused the Congress in Meghalaya of spreading rumours about the Centre banning beef “to cover up its failure on the development front”.
Speaking to reporters after the rally at Manikganj town in Mendipather on Tuesday evening, BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli said rumours are being spread against his party by the Congress government over a recent notification issued by the Ministry of Forests and Environment.
“The law on prevention of cruelty against animals, especially those in the agricultural market, was an outcome of a court order. That law was brought in by the Congress party. Why blame the BJP?” said Kohli.
He said, “It was trying to create an emotive issue on a false premise that the BJP wants to bring in beef ban. We are not working on that. We understand that different states have different eating habits and most of the states that have enacted the cow slaughter ban they were all mostly done by the congress governments in the past. I am speaking as the spokesperson of the BJP and I am saying on record that the BJP has not brought to Meghalaya any agenda to ban beef.”
