SHILLONG: The names of two non-tribal men in Nongpoh who had taken Khasi names have been deleted from the electoral roll.
Mithun Chanda and Mintu Chanda had changed their names to Aiban Kharshiing and Vicky Kharshiing in 2013.
The matter was first noticed by the clan and an FIR in this regard was lodged by John F. Kharshiing, adviser, Seng Kur Kharshiing, with Ri Bhoi police.
The State Election Commission conducted an inquiry into the case and found that both are Bengalis.
Mithun had sworn an affidavit before the ADM Nongpoh in 2013 and the name change was notified publicly.
According to the report of the Electoral Registration Officer of Nongpoh, both admitted to their mistake and their names were deleted from the electoral roll.
Later, John Kharshiing said the concern is how did the individuals file an affidavit and who were the lawyers who had helped them.
