Over 400 road accident deaths in State in 2 yrs

SHILLONG: Close to 900 accidents were reported in the State during 2015-16. This was revealed by the statistics provided by the Meghalaya Police.
As per records, 572 accidents were reported in the State in 2015, while as many as 282 accidents took place in 2016.
It was also learnt that as many as 207 people died in accidents in 2015 and 763 people were injured in the incidents.
Despite lesser number of accidents registered, there was not much difference in the death toll in 2016 which stood at 204. Meanwhile, 372 people were injured in accidents in the same year.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had recently expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents in the State.
Narrow and congested roads, violation of traffic and road safety rules, lack of dividers in most of the roads in the State, drunk driving etc., are seen as the major causes of road accidents in the State which has seen a rapid rise in the number of vehicles on the roads.
Over the last few years, Shillong city has also witnessed an increasing number of road accidents involving two wheelers which have swelled in numbers.
