SHILLONG: The upgradation and widening of the Mairang-Ranigodown-Azra road is almost completed and the road is already proving to be a boon for people of West Khasi Hills who no longer have to visit Shillong while they are going to Guwahati.
The road project has been divided into two segments – West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district.
A PWD official in Ri Bhoi informed that the widening of the road in their district was completed in 2014.
The construction work in West Khasi Hills will be officially completed in a few days, the official informed.
Out of 82 km of the road, 55 km including a major bridge falls under Mairang PWD Road Division.
West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Arun Kembhavi said that the entire stretch of road in the district is completed except a 30 metre portion of the approach road leading to the bridge. The project was sanctioned in 2010 and has been delayed by over three years due to slow progress of the work.
The total estimate of the project was Rs 100 crore with a North Eastern Council (NEC) funding of Rs 90 crore, the fifth and final installment of which was released in April this year.
