SHILLONG: The issue of cow slaughter figured in the meeting of the party leaders of Meghalaya with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Saturday. The meeting was held to discuss the matter related to minorities in the North East and Jammu & Kashmir.
Congress legislator Kennedy Khriem, former legislator Abdus Saleh and Shillong MP Vincent Pala met Gandhi in Delhi.
Khriem said though the meeting was specifically on matters related to minorities, he did raise the Centre’s notification banning cow slaughter.
“I posed a question as to how slaughter of cattle for food can be cruelty to animals as it is for human consumption. My query was also on how human beings are assaulted and tortured in the name of protecting the cows which are also part of the food chain,” Khriem said.
According to Khriem, if slaughtering cattle is cruelty to animals, what about other animals which are not touched by the Centre in its notification. “Will the cruelty not apply when someone kills animals other than cattle for food,” he asked.
Khriem, who is also the CLP secretary said that he will stay back in Delhi and meet the party vice president again on Monday to discuss ways and means to strengthen the Congress in Meghalaya.
