SHILLONG: ‘Blood across borders is the same’ was what Debajyoti Paul had to say about his noble gesture on Wednesday, celebrated as World Blood Donor Day.
Paul, who is the general secretary of a blood donation organisation in Sylhet in Bangladesh, was prompt to donate blood at a camp on the premises of U Soso Tham Auditorium.
It was a coincidence that Paul was in Shillong on Wednesday and happened to pass by the camp. He persuaded his uncle, an Indian resident, to check the programme and found out that it was a blood donation camp.
“I feel thankful and it is special that I am donating blood in India. Blood across borders is the same and people everywhere can donate blood as it is a humanitarian effort,” said the 21-year-old blood donor from the neighbouring country when asked at a programme in the city why he wished to go to the camp.
He stated that he would come back during Christmas and New Year.
When asked on the blood donation scenario in Bangladesh, the general secretary of Sanchalan said, “The present blood donation scenario in Bangladesh is very good. There are several organisations like Sanchalan, Sandhoni and Bandhan which hold blood donation camps.”
