Flash flood claims four lives in Guwahati

Guwahati: Year’s first wave of flood in Assam triggered by incessant rains and flash flood in Guwahati city has claimed at least four human lives including a Class VII student so far.
All the deaths have occurred in Guwahati city where most of the areas were deluged by flash flood triggered by heavy downpour since Tuesday last.
Official sources said that over 13,000 people in four districts of the state including 10,000 in Lakhimpur district alone, have been affected by the wave of flood so far. The water level in main channel Brahmaputra has been rising while at least three of its tributaries – Jia-Bharali, Puthimari and Singora – apart from the Katakhal river in the Barak Valley were flowing above the danger mark, according to latest report issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
In Guwahati city , while two persons including a school student were electrocuted during the massive inundation in the city due to heavy rains on Tuesday, the bodies of two persons was fished out of the Bahini river and Silsako wetland respectively, in the heart of the city by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel.
One ailing woman died at inundated Tarun Nagar area of the city because the ambulance allegedly could not reach her home due to floods.
Kamrup metropolitan district administration has declared Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased persons, while a magisterial enquiry has been ordered to probe the deaths caused in the city.
Kamrup (Metro) district deputy commissioner M Angamuthu said Guwahati registered an unprecedented heavy rainfall causing wide spread inundation of the entire city on Tuesday. The rain triggered landslides at 13 hilly localities in the city.
The areas worst affected by floods in the city included Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Jyotikuchi, Ghoramora, RG Barua Road, Jorabat, Panjabari, Lamb Road and Chatribari. More rainfall is predicted for the next two days in the city and surrounding areas.
