SHILLONG: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made it clear that the project from Tetelia till Byrnihat and Shillong will not be scrapped.
An official source on condition of anonymity said that a project of this magnitude conceived for the benefit of the entire population of the State should not be scrapped for the interest of a few.
It was also informed that the railway project has been halted following the recent violence at Rongkhona in Ri Bhoi. Last month’s incident was the second attack on the project.
“Unless there is a political will, the problem cannot be solved,” the official source said.
Meanwhile, it was also informed that the Meghalaya Government in its meeting with NFR recently did not give any assurance on how the construction for the railway project could start again.
“The Meghalaya Government only told NFR that they would construct facilitation centres at all the railway stations and we have no problem (with it). It is a minor issue,” sources said.
It was further informed that last month, the survey work for the railway project till Shillong was again halted after the workers were threatened.
