SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma called for setting up of a facilitation centre at Mendipathar railway station to check entry of illegal migrants.
The facilitation centre, according to the chief minister, will serve as an alternative to the Inner Line Permit (ILP), whereby the authorities can verify the identity of people arriving at the station and check the flow of illegal migrants.
Sangma also inspected the site for the proposed facilitation centre during a visit to Mendipathar railway station in North Garo Hills on Wednesday.
Earlier, during the visit, he held a meeting with the Divisional Commercial Manager, N.F. Railway, Rangiya Division. While interacting with the officials of N.F. Railway the chief minister said the railway station should be equipped with a facilitation centre.
He added that creating the facility in the railway station will enable the government to have a filtering mechanism and also ensure safety of travelers. The chief minister also suggested that the facilitation centre should have help desks and other facilities like café, eateries etc.
Sangma was accompanied by Additional Chief Secretary, in charge Transport, Shreeranjan and Commissioner of Transport, I Ingty.
