SHILLONG: Congress Minister Prestone Tynsong may be projected as the chief ministerial candidate of NPP provided he tries to get maximum seats in Khasi and Jaintia Hills in the 2018 polls.
Though Tynsong had denied reports of him joining NPP, it was heard on the grapevine that he will be offered the CM post provided that he gets the maximum support of MLAs from Khasi-Jaintia Hills after the next polls.
However, sources added that if NPP gets majority seats in Garo Hills, the chief ministerial post may go to an elected MLA from that region.
When contacted recently, NPP National President Conrad Sangma refused to comment on the chief ministerial candidate by stating that the elected MLAs will take a call on the matter.
Sources said Sangma is not keen to come back to state politics and hence he wanted to entrust any other effective leader to lead the government in case the party comes to power.
According to sources, with heavy anti-incumbency wave against the Congress and BJP just making its presence felt in rural areas unlike urban centres, some state politicians are seeing NPP as an alternative to both the national parties.
