SHILLONG: The Congress is making a move to recommend administrator’s rule in KHADC to thwart the attempt of BJP-backed PDF, led by suspended Congress member P.N Syiem, to continue in power in the Council.
According to a government source, armed with the letter of complaint from 12 member opposition comprising the Congress, UDP and HSPDP, a recommendation may go from the State Government to the Governor to invoke the administrator’s rule in KHADC.
The move is after the opposition with just 12 members failed to topple the P.N Syiem-led KHADC Executive Committee that had 14 members, including the chairman, during a no-confidence motion last week.
Three MDCs remained absent during the session held on Thursday.
Though the no-confidence motion was moved, HSPDP member Teilinia Thangkhiew did not initiate discussion on the matter as the opposition preferred to stage a walkout.
They later met the District Council Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong seeking the intervention of the government citing partiality on the part of the chairman.
However, the KHADC Executive Committee defended the decision of the chairman by saying that he had followed the rules and that the PDF had the majority.
When contacted, the KHADC CEM said that the government should not misuse it’s authority in imposing wrong decision as in the past, it had failed on the issue of the dual post Bill, which had prevented any MDC from holding the post of MLA, whereas he is still continuing as a member of KHADC due to the High Court ruling supported by Election Commission.
