KOLKATA: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said death of babies in hospsitals was a major problem not only in West Bengal, but across the country.

“It is a major problem across the country. We have to address it,” he told reporters outside his residence in south Kolkata.

His comment was in reply to a question on the recent death of more than 40 infants in three Government hospitals in Kolkata, Burdwan and Malda. The latest incident that took place was the death of nine babies in Malda district hospital over the past two days.

Earlier, 36 infants had died at the referral BC Roy Children’s hospital in Kolkata and in Burdwan Medical College and hospital last month. Meanwhile, Malda District Hospital Superintendent HK Ari said a medical board had been set up to go into the reasons of the infant deaths and fix responsibility. (UNI)
