TURA: The Government will build hostels for college students from rural areas in partnership with dedicated groups, like religious organisations.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a tribal girls’ hostel at Hawakhana in Tura on Monday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said it is a worry that the districts of Garo Hills have not been able to cross the pass percentage of 36 in board examinations.
Attributing the alarming rate of failure to the weak chain in education at the elementary level, including lack of dedicated teachers and hostels for students coming from rural areas, Sangma stressed on the need to give special attention to vulnerable groups of students “to infuse in them the sense of hope”.
The hostel was sanctioned under Article 275(1) of the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs and implemented  by the State Government through Social Welfare Department and Women’s Economic Development Society, Tura.
The chief minister also informed the gathering about the teachers’ training programme being initiated by the government for which a grant of Rs 5,000 would be given to those who aspire to become teachers.
