Bullfights organised in Jaintia Hills (ST File)

JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills district administration is taking strong measures to ban bull fights, organised by a group of businessmen in various parts of the district regularly.

Bullfight ,a traditional sport, has turned into the biggest illegal money-making business in Jaintia Hills which attracts hundreds of people from all walks of life.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, T. Dkhar said, “I have asked the police and the sub-divisional officers of Khliehriat and Amlarem civil sub-Division to send me a report within a week or two”.

The D C also informed that he had received several complaints from the people of the district in this regard.

Earlier, the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) had lodged a complaint with Jowai police against various organisers.

Meanwhile the Jaintia Students Union (JSU) has asked the Deputy Commissioner and the Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police to ban the illegal business in the District.

“Such illegal business should not be allowed and the district administration should take stern action against all those who are organizing such business”, said JSU President, Elnathan Pale

Bullfights and dice gambling are organised in various parts of the district regularly particularly in areas like Hynniawmer (7th Miles) in Ialong, Sookilo in Sutnga, Shangpung and Byndihat without any permissionfrom any authority except an NOC from the concerned rangbah shnong of the area.

Though the illegal business is conducted openly, Jaintia Hills police have so far conducted raids only once at Hynniawmer in July this year.

After that no raids were conducted and the same organizers got back to business as usual.
