GUWAHATI: The ruling NDA’s nominee for the presidential election, Ram Nath Kovind arrived here on Thursday for a two-day campaign visit to the Northeastern States.

After arriving in Assam on Thursday morning, Kovind went to Itanagar in the BJP-ruled Arunachal Pradesh to interact with ruling party legislatures there.  He is accompanied by several senior BJP leaders including Ram Madhab and Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

He will meet legislators of the ruling BJP in Assam and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) on Thursday evening. ON his return from Itanagar, Kovind was received in the airport here by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal

The NDA’s nominee will travel to Shillong on Friday to seek support of MLAs opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and National People’s Party (NPP) in Congress ruled Meghalaya. He will go to Manipur and Nagaland on Friday after his visit to Shillong. While the BJP-led alliance is in power in Manipur, Nagaland is ruled by the BJP’s ally Naga People’s Front (NPF).

Meanwhile, all the six Trinamool Congress (TMC) Congress from Tripura are scheduled to meet Kovind here on Thursday evening amid speculations that they would join the BJP after they had been suspended by the TMC on charges getting too close to the saffron party.
