SHILLONG: HSPDP will boycott the presidential election scheduled for July 17.
In a press statement issued here on Thursday, HSPDP said the party, during a meeting of the central executive committee on Wednesday, decided not to take part in the presidential polls. It said it did not want to support the candidates put up by the Congress and BJP.
Asserting that HSPDP will not support BJP candidate Ram Nath Kovind for his anti-secular stand, the party said, “In March 2010, he had said, ‘Christianity and Islam are alien to the nation’.” Referring to Congress candidate Meira Kumar, HSPDP said, “The Congress has ruined the country through corruption.”
HSPDP legislators did not attend Kumar’s address on Wednesday in the State Assembly.
