NONGPOH: Hundreds of commuters on the busy national highway 6 had a close shave on Thursday evening when a hillock collapsed following heavy rainfall in Ri Bhoi.
The landslide occurred at Umsawnongkharai village along the highway around 4pm. Locals said the hillock was shrinking due to loose soil.
No casualty was reported but hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to road block.
However, Nongpoh traffic police acted promptly and asked the National Highway Authority of India to clear the debris. Incessant rain in the last few days has caused landslides in different areas. It becomes imperative for the highway authority to take note of the landslide-prone areas and make efforts to prevent such disasters.
