NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) on Friday issued a notice to Delhi Golf Club for asking a Khasi woman to leave because she was wearing her traditional dress. The panel has also decided to investigate the case.
The move follows a representation from the Meghalaya State Commission for Women Chairperson Theilin Phanbuh and the Civil Society of Assam.
The case will be investigated in pursuance of the powers conferred on it under Article 338(A) of the Constitution of India, sources in the commission said.
The notice says if the commission does not receive a reply from the club within the stipulated period it may exercise the powers of civil courts conferred on it under Clause 8 of Article 338A of the Constitution. It will also issue summons to the officials of the club asking them to appear in person before the commission.
NCST has asked the club to submit its reply, facts and information on the matter and action taken on the allegation to the Commission within seven days.
On June 25, Tailin Lyngdoh, who was wearing Jainsem, was told to leave the club because she was dressed “like a maid”.
The woman works for Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, an honorary health advisor to the Assam government, and is a governess to her son. They were invited to lunch by a club member. The incident raised a hue and cry in the North East following which the club instituted an inquiry, which was boycotted by the Lyngdoh family.
