SHILLONG: The IG-level talks between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) will be held in the city from July 12 to 15. The three-day talks will focus on a range of issues, including trans-border crime and development of border areas among others, officials said.
When asked about fencing, the officials said work has been stalled for the last two months due to the arrival of the monsoon.
About 80-90km of the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya is yet to be fenced though land has already been acquired.
Meghalaya shares 443 km border with Bangladesh that is prone to smuggling of cattle and contraband, besides intrusions of Bangladeshi immigrants.
The Central Government’s decision to construct fence 150 yards inside the zero line is being opposed by land owners and pressure groups in the State who are demanding that the fence should come up on the zero line to prevent loss of arable land.
