SHILLONG: A person identified as Yakub Khan Nongkynrih was lynched by a mob in Upper Shillong area on Saturday after accusing that he had raped an 11-year-old girl of the locality. Police have arrested the father and brother of the girl in connection with the lynching.
Police informed that the brother of the girl first saw an objectionable video of her with the accused as well as obscene photos of her in the cell phone of Nongkynrih and informed the rest of the family members who then locked up Nongkynrih in his room and called the police through the locality head at around 7 P.M. on Saturday.
However, as the alleged incident of rape of the minor girl spread like a wildfire, locals barged into the house of the accused and beat him black and blue before police reached there at around 8 P.M. He was later declared dead in the hospital.
A relative of the girl claimed that Nongkynrih passed away in the hospital. He added that the girl had disclosed that the accused used to threaten her with a knife in case she dared to informed anyone about the video and obscene photos.
When contacted, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Davis Marak said that the accused succumbed to his injuries in the hospital and that two policemen received minor injuries while trying to rescue him from mob fury.
Narrating the incident, he said, “When the police team from Jhalupara reached the place, the people had already beaten up the accused severely. The police tried to rescue the victim from the public and in the process, two of the policemen received minor injuries.” Marak said that the mother of the minor girl had filed an FIR with the police against the rape accused at 12: 30 pm on Sunday. He added that the phone of Nongkynrih had been seized and the rape allegations would be investigated.
