SHILLONG: Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) has called off their strike on Monday following discussions with the newly-appointed Managing Director (MD) of the corporation, P M Sangma, officers and union members on Friday, a Press communiqué stated.

It may be mentioned that Sangma assumed charge as MD of the MTC on Friday. The 13-day agitation was called by the MTCWU demanding the reinstatement of the former Managing Director of MTC, A Nikhla.

According to a source, the new MD has expressed concern that the strike would cause losses to the MTC which prompted the union to call off the strike.

Meanwhile, K Rumnong, general secretary of MTCWU said, “We decided to call off the strike as the students are facing problem because of non-plying of buses by the MTC when they are having examinations.”

The agitation caused serious inconvenience for tourists and school children who used the services of the MTC.

The MTC strike started on June 27 last disrupting all the MTC services including inter-state and internal bus services, school bus services, railway counter and helicopter services.
