SHILLONG: ECB Bamon, a close associate of late PA Sangma, on Tuesday resigned from the National People’s Party (NPP) which, he predicted, has a “bleak future” under the young leadership.
The veteran leader, who resigned as the party’s vice-president and also from the primary membership, told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday, “The present NPP leaders say the party has a big dream but they are only day-dreaming. There is a rough weather prevailing within NPP’s rank and file. There is no new ground, no direction or approach, especially for the development of people. Without (PA) Sangma, NPP is bleak.”
Looking up to late PA Sangma as his political mentor, Bamon regarded himself as one of the founding members of NPP. The veteran leader, however, said he found it unsuitable to continue in the party after the death of Sangma.
“I was with Purno Sangma since 1982 when he was with the Congress and I followed Sangma when he left the Congress in 1999,” he said, adding, “I used to think deeply if my political mentor left it (the party) for good then who am I to remain in the party? I am a nobody.”
Bamon said he would continue his 34-year political career and contest the Assembly elections next year. He is likely to join another political party by the end of this month.
When asked about the leadership of NPP president Conrad Sangma, Bamon said Conrad did not have a clear mindset.
