SHILLONG: Information Technology Minister Ampreen Lyngdoh on Wednesday called upon the young people of the state to be innovative and strive to acquire adequate skills in their respective areas of interest to survive the stiff competition.

Addressing the inauguration function of a national seminar on, ‘Recent developments in Chemistry,’ at St. Mary’s College, Laitumkhrah, the minister said many young people lived in a make-believe world that they would perish without a government job.

“Many young people don’t want to travel out and that is where the problem lies,” She asserted.

“As for the development in chemistry, we need to find out where our kids can go, the students should be involved in exposure to enable them to understand what they want to do with chemistry,” she added.

Lyngdoh who was a former Education Minister lamented that the system of education that has been prevailing in the country for many decades would no longer be productive for the citizens of the country in respect of creating employment avenues.

“We have to stop churning out the hundreds of degree holders in our country particularly in our state. We have to be able to train the citizens to be innovative. We have to enable the students to create a niche for themselves irrespective of their stream of study,” she added.

She exhorted upon the teachers to educate young people by instilling in them the spirit of innovativeness and the zeal to learn to survive in a competitive market.

Lyngdoh said, “Through such national seminars, students will be able to understand the level education prevailing in reputed national institutions.”

Lyngdoh expressed concern that the state had no industry worth the name even as it was struggling to understand the different kinds of markets.
